As a youth, Kay’s family were killed by gnolls. Taken hostage and treated as a “pet” to be beaten and persecuted, he shared this ignominious fate with another young boy by the name of (PC) Vashkakish. They helped each other get through the months that followed. He learned their gutteral language, so as to better avoid the next beating, and developed a hatred of their kind and a strong will to survive so he might wreak his vengeance upon them.
After a raid on his gnoll “family” by rangers from Fort Longjaw, he was rescued and taken in – quickly becoming a protegee of Giana Ironstride. He developed quite an affection (more accurately an adolescent crush) on Giana, and spent much time and effort trying to get her to return the attention.
Her beau, offended and paranoid by Kay’s overzealous attention, arranged for him to be part of every gnoll raiding party he possibly could. Kay’enn survived them all and in doing so, became a master of survival, and of slaying the gnoll, especially from distance with a combination of longbow and stealth.
Occasional meetings with (PC) Vashkakish have maintained your connection, tense though it sometimes becomes, as you often do not see eye-to-eye.
With news of the planned trip to Kelmarane, and their need for a reliable wilderness guide reaching the Fort, Giana’s lover sees yet another opportunity to try and make sure that the troublesome orphan no longer dogs his woman’s every move.
Kay, meanwhile, sees great opportunity to impress his “mistress” by performing his duties with honour and bravery, and hopes to return with tales of how his skills saved the soft city-folk from Gnolls many times, and to present her with a collection of teeth from his kills as a token of his affection and loyalty. Knowing his pack-brother will be there is a good reason to spend more time with him, and see if they can bridge some of the gaps in their friendship that have developed over the years of infrequent contact.
