ONE OF EVERYTHING

Events

With the Battlemarket now clear, the heroes set about to ensure that the entirety of Kelmarane was clear of evil doers. In the mean time, Nini and Ding take up residence at an abandoned shop nearby to the Temple of Sarenrae. Their shop, entitled “One of Everything” would be a haven for travellers and like minded adventurers to get replacements for those lost and much needed items. Their sales pitch, to sell one of everything – including only one of anything with a pair.

As dusk settled, the Gnomes bunker down in their newly acquired store, while Kay’enn, Khalid and Vash (with Zuum) settled into the tower to keep a watchful eye on the Kelmarane surrounds. In the distance, the heroes catch a glimpse of a few camp fires in the hills, obvious being the Gnolls who fled the town. Nini and Ding set themselves up and activate an alarm spell near the front door. Unfortunately it was not enough as their placement allowed for some undead Gnoll Ghouls to enter their shop, each on the hunt for flesh.

With the held of a fire elemental, and some well placed spells, the Gnome vanquished the undead spawn, but not before falling victim to their disease soaked claws. The remaining party members, having heard the alarm in the distance, quickly rushed to their aid, just in time to bring Nini and Ding back from certain death.

Kay’enn tracked the Ghouls to the Temple of Sarenrae and each of the group agreed to keep a watchful eye on the complex overnight. The Gnomes agreed to stay with the group in the tower. The remainder of the evening was uneventful.

The heroes then began their plot to liberate the Temple and deal with whatever menace was lurking there. Upon entering, the heroes are confronted by a bizarre scene. A Priest of Sarenrae was nailed to a large holy symbol of the Dawnflower its body limp from obviously hours of exhaustion and torture. Standing at the end near the Alter was none other than Zakhan, the Undead Genie, and now Great Ghoul.

The battle was swift and the heroes easily dispatched the creature, but not before discovering that the Priest of Saranrae was nothing more than a Heuveca, disguised in a way to trick the heroes. At the conclusion of the battle, the Great Ghoul claimed to Vardishal (Khalid) that he had finally been released and that he would again be at his masters side, just as his remaining flesh and bones turned to dust.

With Kelmarane now clear, the heroes give signal to Almah and her team to enter the town. Khalid, however, was not convinced, and could sense a lingering evil within the temple. Perhaps it was something that would require further inspection.

Upon the arrival of Almnah, the heroes explain what they had done and that Kelmarane was now free. Khalid spoke up and asked to be able to rid the Temple of whatever evil was below. Almah again advised that the heroes were not yet ready, and offered each an opportunity to help rebuild Kelmarane.

Kay’enn claimed that he would prefer to return to Fort Longjaw in an attempt to convince the Severed Paw to move their operations from Fort Longjaw to Kelmarane. Vash claimed that he had little interest in politics, but would be happy to help scout the surrounding areas and gather intelligence on Gnoll movements as well as other points of interest in the surrounding deserts and mountains. Nini and Ding agree that they would prefer to remain as shop owners, although Ding did agree to act as an adviser to Princess Almah. Khalid however was more concerned with the evil that lurked beneath the town and was eager to deal with its presence. For this reason, Khalid agreed to help establish a garrison of Holy warriors, loyal to Kelmarane and to Saraenrae.

Adventure Summary XX
HOWL OF THE CARRION KING

The heroes having moved up into one of the abandoned town houses observed the tower and two Gnolls which appeared to be monitoring the surrounding area. Behind the Battlemarket were a number of merchant caravans, some hitched to horses. The noise of a crowd could be heard behind the Battlemarket relative to where the heroes were positioned.

Kay’enn decided to move behind the buildings to come closest to the North door which he had been given the key for by Undrella. As he moved into position he could hear a rousing speech by someone at the top of the Battlemarket.

"My Kin! For over 200 years I have wandered this land and at no time have I relished in the cry of the beast as I have today. Gnoll clans from across the Brazen Peaks have finally come together to protect our new home here in Kat-Creeak-tor."

Howls came from the crowd.

"The humans come to us with their magics and their blades and they burn and cut us. But do we give up?

In gnoll, the crowd of of the creatures scream the word, "No!"

"And why? Because always behind us is our Lord and saviour who will bring those not of our kin to their knees. As night falls my friends, we will begin our purge of this land and reclaim what is rightfully ours. Soon, we will feast on their flesh and we will be victorious. For we are Kuldis; we are Circle; we are Al’Chorhaiv; we are Three Jaws; we are Wormhollow; and we are we are all brothers of the Carrion King!"

The final words result in the gathering gnolls erupting in applause and howls. Kay’enn realised that this was the perfect opportunity to make their move, and so he signaled to the others.

As Vash and Khalid moved up, the Gnomes took the opportunity to run to a cart to discover what was contained within. The Gnomes arrived at the back of the first cart and Nini was assisted inside by Ding whilst Piranya kept a watchful eye out. Unfortunately, one of the Gnolls in the tower spotted Ding as he lifted Nini inside. The Gnolls fired an arrow each hitting both Ding and Nini. Nini sent Piranya to scare the horse which worked well causing the horse to reel in fear and begun running down the path away from the Battlemarket. As Nini held on, she yelled at Ding to jump on, and Ding jumped successfully managing to grab onto the back of the cart, dragging him behind.

Kay’enn reached the door and hid behind the alcove created by the door jam. As he reached into his pocket to obtain the key to open the massive wooden door, his eyes focused on the horse and cart rushing away down the path. Kay’enn shuddered as he saw the cause of the horses panic – Dini in the cart, a few coins falling behind in the dirt, and trailing behind, Ding – somehow wishing that he had brought his snow shoes.

As much he was concerned with Ding and Nini’s latest adventure, it was the perfect opportunity for him, Khalid and Vash to sneak inside. Kay’enn motioned for his companions to come across as the door easily unlocked, and Kay’enn slipped inside.

Khalid and Vash followed the ranger inside the door, closing them quietly behind them. Before them was a huge gathering of human, gnoll and other races. The sounds of arguments, friendly conversations, laughter, music and of course battle filled their ears, while the smells of cooking meat, liquor, smoke, and the stench of wet dog assaulted their nostrils. This was clearly a party for the gnolls who had taken control of Kelmarane – and one the heroes were clearly not invited to.

As the door closed the noise was heard by one of a group of Bugbears who were reveling in the bar. Kay’enn offered a friendly wave, and the bugbear raised its drink in reply. Beyond the bugbear the heroes could see what appeared to be a battle arena of sorts with a raised platform constructed of hard wood and metal. Standing on the platform was a massive ogre facing off against a man of short stature, dressed in peace-meal leather armour and armed with a rusty sword and handmade shield. This was clearly a match that would end badly for the human. As the heroes watched on, the human attempted to charge the monster as the creatures hands wrapped around the mans throat and with a loud pop the ogre tore the man’s torso in half spraying blood across the crowd seated in the small standium. Khalid begun to move forward, but Kay’enn placed a hand on his shoulder.

“This is not our battle,” claimed Kay’enn, “We have a job to do.”

Khalid nodded as Kay’enn motioned towards the set of stairs to their right which led to an upper portion of the battle market. The three, along with Zuum, made their way up the curved stairs which lead them them to the second level.

As they reached the second level, the heroes make their way down a corridor an notice that the level had a large opening in the centre allowing people to watch the battles below. The heroes also notice that there are a series of stores in rooms on the level along with an area where the band area playing. As the heroes explore the market they come across a strange room filled with a bizarre alchemical apparatus against the west wall — the infusion — is a maze of glass beakers connected by rubber tubes. Seven of these tubes project from the apparatus, ending in syringe-like needles, and each containing a strange liquid. Suddenly a being enters the room, mixing two chemicals together. The creature looked up to see the group a smile crossed her face.

“Oh good. You made it. I was beginning to get worried”, said Undrella, the Harpy that the heroes had met earlier.

NOTES:

  • Conversation with Undrella when Khalid confirms that the harpy was evil and clearly displayed that he was not interested in working with the creature. The conversation ended with Kay’enn and Vash leading the young Paladin away.
  • Whilst sneaking around, the heroes saw a gnoll enter a storage room and remove a barrel of rum, but not before stealing a bottle of obviously stolen wine.
  • The heroes came across a doorway protected by two gnoll guards. While the guards attempted to intimidate the heroes, they soon learned that the attack that they were prepared for had finally come. Two of the gnolls quickly fell, as two others entered through the door. The heroes dispatched them and moved into the room.
  • The heroes heard gnolls yelling at each other calling for them to barricade the door. Vash send Zuum to investigate and was set upon by one of the gnolls who was hiding behind a wall. Zuum retaliated bringing the gnoll to the ground. Vash joined his companion up the stairs only to be set upon by another waiting gnoll.

Adventure Summary IXX
CHILD OF WAR

With great reverence the body of Khalid is laid upon the pyre, in accordance with the ancient text of Sarenrae found with Khalid’s effects.

The rite is performed, and personal words are spoken by those that are left behind.

The pyre is finally lit.

The damp timber sputters a spits as the fire attempts to take purchase, a weak flame creeps along the sodden timber. Worried looks appear on the faces of those present, it will not bode well if the pyre does not light.

Just then a break in the cloud cover sends a beam of sun light directly onto the steaming heap and the pyre erupts in a massive conflagration, the blinding light and heat force all stumbling back.

With blurred vision, those gathered turn back to the pyre to witness a flaming effigy slowly gliding down the sun beam to rest above the pyre within the flames. A sound beyond mere mortals comprehension issues forth from the being, and the fire builds even higher.

From within the flames can be seen a smoky figure rising from repose and floating to stand before the flaming figure, the smoky figure kneels in obeisance to the effigy, a young woman, dressed in flowing white robes, a golden Ankh around her neck. This effigy is clearly something from the heavens or at the very least, not of this world. More incomprehensible sounds issue forth from the flaming avatar, as she lays her hand on the forehead of the smoky figure, an intensely bright light issues forth from her hand. At her touch, the figure convulses once and then settles, smoke rising from his eyes, ears and forehead.

After the sounds and light cease, the figure rises and turns toward those gathered, and descends to the floor of the temple as if walking down stairs. As the figure strides down from the pyre, a still smouldering mark can be seen imprinted into the figure’s forehead, its form closely resembling the symbol seen beyond within the stained glass of the temple wall above the altar. It is clearly the mark of Sarenrae.

As the smoke parts, the descending figure becomes more distinct. What stands before the congregation is a tall hansom figure, black of hair, with steel blue eyes, that seem to burn with the reflected fire from within. The man is resplendent in polished armour emblazoned with the symbol of Sarenrae, and armed with a unique double bladed curved sword in one hand, whilst a tiny wooden box hangs from a leather thong at his neck. The party appear shocked at first as they recognise the facial features of the figure as that of their fallen friend, Khalid.

As the man looks about the congregation, the floating fiery figure behind him speaks.

“I return to you your companion, in the only way I am able. He belongs to my heart and soul now; he is my pawn in this game. I, however cannot interfere again. Should this child of Sarenrae fall, he will be not rise again. I should warn you though, that this child, once this time of strife has passed, shall again lie low and his spirit and life will again become my own. Go forth Khalid-shihab-al-hashim son of Marilesh sister of Vardishal, and do my bidding”

Khalid turns and kneels in the presence of his patron, and quietly responds, "Yes, my Lady, Saranrae.”

At this, the goddess ascends and the sunlight beam fades, just as the fire within the pyre subsides to nothing and all that is left is ash. The figure stands tall for a second peering up at the departing effigy, a sad look in his eyes, and then collapses to the floor unconscious.

Kay’enn, stunned by the events that had occurred, rushes to the side of Khalid, followed closely by Vash. Ding and Nini, the later pulling Khalid’s wand from her belt, also run to his side. Kay’enn tells the gnome that he is breathing, and Nini sets tries desperately to use the curing wand to assist Khalid. Nothing. Ding whips the wand from Nini’s hand in order to show her the correct way. This also provides unsuccessful. Vash offers assistance and quickly heals Khalid with a short burst from the wand. Khalid awakens and is assisted by Vash and Zastoran back to a bed within the Monastery. A guard enters the hall and quickly makes his way to Garavel. He explains that a group of humanoids on horseback appear to be approaching the Monastery from the rear. Garavel quickly turns to Kay’enn who immediately offers to assist.

NOTES:

  • Kay’enn notices the group of men on horseback (6 in total). He meets them and finds that one is Dashki, and that others are from Fort Longjaw including 4 rangers and Rentaal, one of Gianna Longstride’s Lieutenants.
  • Is discovered that Dashki has walked to Fort Longjaw, sought help, and then returned with the men on Horseback. The horses are quite spent having being forced to travel as quickly as they could.
  • Dashki shows resentment to Kay’enn and Vash. Never the less, he is welcomed by the gnomes.
  • Rentaal shows that he has no respect for Kay’enn, confidently treating him as an inferior, and correcting him wherever possible, especially in from of Almah and Garavel.
  • Rentaal and his men are shown the area
  • Gnomes burn down the wicker man, and turn the smoke blue. They then start on their next project, the creation of series of “Chicken” traps.
  • The rest of the day is spent preparing the site for the imminent attack from the Gnolls as Vash explains that the Gnolls will no doubt wait for nightfall to attack.
  • Ding prepares a sign with explains to Nini that there is to be no fire in the nest to the point where a sign is erected.
  • Rentaal offers advice to Garavel stating that Kay’enn and his group should attack the village from the rear to soften the numbers. Garavel agrees that it is a good plan, and locates Kay’enn to discuss.
  • Kay’enn is reluctant due to it being Rentaal’s suggestion, however agrees that if his friends agree, he will do as Garavel asks – making sure that he is obeying Garavel, and not Rentaal.
  • Rentaal is overheard by Khalid to be discussing things with Kay’een and openly accused the monastery to be a “dump”. Khalid quickly, and near forcibly, explains to Rentaal the error of his ways. Rentaal apologises explaining that he should have been more sensitive to whom was present when he decided to express his opinion.
  • The group head out around mid afternoon, making their way around to the back of Kelmarane through the mountains, with Vash and Kay’enn on foot, and Nini, Ding and Khalid on camel.
  • The group set up an ambush after discovering 4 gnolls and a Hyena starting guard on the rear platforms.
  • The battle was swift and decisive, with only one gnoll being able to cry out.
  • The heroes made their way across the rope bridges and into the town to discover that the upper parts of Kelmarane are being heavily patrolled. They also discover twp wagons and 3 carts which are parked outside of the Battle Market, and two gnoll archers, armed with composite bows, standing guard in a nearby watch tower.

Events

Having recovered from their ordeal with the undead denizens of the tower, the heroes returned to the Monastery. Once they had healed their wounds, and organised the recovery of their missing equipment, the heroes made plans to attack Kelmarane before the Gnoll hordes had a chance to strike first. As Kay’enn, Khalid and Vash prepared to head out, their attention was drawn to strange chanting coming from the rear of the Monastery. After making their way around, they soon found Ding and Nini naked apart from a head dress made of feathers. Upon being questioned, Ding explained that they were performing a rain dance. Khalid had had enough, and said he was heading to Kelmarane as he was paid to do. Kay’enn and Vash soon realise their mistake with trying to have the Gnomes explain their ritual, and quickly dispersed allowing the Gnomes to finish.

Kay’enn, Khalid and Vash made their way through the Pesh fields, hoping to go unnoticed. About halfway there, a storm rolled in over the hills, quickly turning dusk into near darkness. It was only Khalid who had difficulties which meant that it was up to Kay’enn and Vash to lead the strike into the Kelmarane.

As lightning flashed above them, the heavens opened with torrential rain. This, although uncomfortable made excellent cover for the heroes in their mission. Kay’enn stealthfully moved up first, quickly spotting four Gnolls on guard duty near the open area at the bottom of the hill. As two of the Gnolls branched away to return up the hill, Kay’enn motioned for the others to move up to the buildings. Silently, Khalid and Vash moved into position. When the time was right, Kay’enn gave the signal, and two arrows quickly found their mark, felling a gnoll warrior. The others rushed in and quickly dispatched the other gnolls.

Soon after, as Kay’enn took yet another memento of a gnoll kill, both Vash and Kay’enn heard something coming up the hill behind them. The three moved in position, although Khalid was not entirely sure what the fuss was about. Pira-nya was the first to be seen, and Kay’enn motioned for the creature to him. Kay’enn knew that the gnomes were not far behind, and almost on cue the three heard squelching coming towards them. Almost crawling in the mud were Nini and Ding, both with their pockets full of something which appeared to be mud.

Kay’enn quickly explained the situation, and both Ding and Nini applied the dirt to their faces, clearly an attempt at disguise, and stated that they were ready for action. The group then made their way over to what appeared to be the old gatehouse to investigate what they had seen the gnolls feeding earlier. Pira-nya was the first to examine the interior of the ruined building, and as it peered around the corner, it was gored by the tusk of a Dire Boar, obviously upset about the intruders. The heroes made their way into position, but not before Vash’s pet, Zuum Zuum, was gored by the bear, a fierce cut running down its body from the boars massive tusks. The creature however was easily felled, and the heroes made forward once more.

The heroes’ target was the old mill where they had seen the Peryton fly to. Whilst making their way to the mill, Zuum caught wind of something in a nearby building. The heroes, not wanting to take chances, barged into the building with a surprise attack. The heroes were confronted with a young man wearing a worn leather breastplate, a tarnished helmet and a makeshift spear. As the heroes intruded, the man panicked, throwing the spear at the now enlarged Khalid. The spear missed, but hit the barn door as Kay’enn entered the building.

Vash readied his weapon as did Khalid, but Ding stood between them declaring that the group shouldn’t hurt him. The man agreed and said that his name was Philliped and that he had been in Kelmarane for a number of weeks, hiding from the gnolls who had captured him and his companions. He claimed that his companions had been killed and that he had escaped. Ding offered to “rescue” him, to which he appeared thankful, although he made it quite clear he was more interested in running away into the desert than confronting any more foes. Both the gnomes agreed to look after him stating that they were on a mission to take back Kelmarane.

The heroes moved on and made their way to the mill. After crossing the river, the heroes briskly moved into the mill. Khalid was the first to enter the building by smashing open the side doors. Kay’enn was next by dexterously climbing the mill’s wheel, using its paddles as make shift stairs. As Kay’enn reached the roof, he found he was face to face with the Peryton. Its evil gaze took on a new meaning when its show dissolved turning into that of Kay’enn.

Khalid vaulted through an opening in the roof, landing close to the Peryton. Although the creature was able to gore Kay’enn with its horn, it was no match for Khalid and the almighty swing of Kay’enn’s mace. The weapon struck true, near obliterating the creature’s skull, it’s now limp body falling motionless on the waterlogged rooftop. The heroes knew that their spells were near to wearing off, and so quickly pushed the Peryton’s body into the mill, and made their way to their next target, a small building near the edge of the Pale River.

Khalid was the first into the building having smashed his way through the door, and was quickly followed by Kay’enn and Vash. The room was filled with a putrid smell. As the heroes quickly observed their surroundings, they realised that the room was filled with bottles, jars and baskets of things of unimaginable horror and intrigue. Near the middle of the room were 3 large cauldrons, and standing in front of one, its back facing the doorway, was what appeared to be an avian looking humanoid with brown mottled feathers. As the heroes entered it spun around, ladle still in hand. Kay’enn and Khalid immediately recognised the creature as a Harpy, its face clearly surprised. Almost as quickly, as Khalid made ready his weapon to crush the creature, the Harpy begged for her life. Once given the opportunity, the Harpy introduced herself as Undrella, and stated that it was clear what the heroes were there to do, and so offered, in exchange for her life, to help them retake Kelmarane. Her only condition was that she be allowed to remain in Kelmarane to continue her business unhindered.

After much discussion, and flirting with the heroes, the party agreed. The creature, not wishing to answer many of the party’s questions, agreed to explain her situation if they brought her the head of the giant Mamba which has taken up residence in the old slavery buildings to the south east. The heroes again agreed, and quickly begun their trek back into the heart of Kelmarane…

Adventure Summary XVI
THE RETURN OF ZAKHAN

After Nini had venturered further into the underground complex, having heard a strange voice whispering her name, she eventually came across a large deer like creature with the head of a badger and the voice of an angel. The creature then introduced Nini to the hosts of this underground retreat, three Ghouls and its Master, a much larger and terrifying Ghoul.

Kay’enn was the first to rescue Nini, as the Ghoul master declared Nini as fresh meat for their gruesome banquet. The heroes then spend some time attempting to run from the creatures which enthusiastically pursued them up the halls. With some quick thinking, Vash summoned some creatures from the sands which took on the ghouls, allowing them to escape. Nini also helped after Piranya was dismissed by also sumoning some creatures to assist in blocking the creature advance. Unfortunately during the assault, Sheba, Khalid’s faithful companion was killed, and was greedily consumed by one of the ghouls.

The retreat was hampered with the earlier paralisation of Zuum Zuum, and the eagerness of the Gnomes to stay behind and “help” keep the creatures at bay. Eventually, as Khalid held the master Ghoul back, allowing the remaining heroes to escape, the creature recognised the remnants of Vardishal which now incorporated into young Khalid’s body and screamed, “I know you Varidshal. And you must die!”

Khalid, through the memory of Varidshal, identified the creature as a Great Ghul, the dead husk of a once great effreti warrior and Lieutenant to Javahul, the mighty General Zakhan. After a short confrontation, Khalid managed to escape and blocked the way for the Ghul to escape. Once free of the crypt, the heroes and wasted no time retreating back to the monastary.

Upon arrival, the heroes quickly set into motion plans to reinforce the monastary as they knew that the Ghul would eventually come looking for Khalid. Nini summoned Piraya and told him to venture back to the Tower to retrieve their belongings.

After quite some time, Piraya returned, having fought the Ghoul dog Sheeba, and quickly returned with the party equipment.

As evening fell, Vash and Kay’enn were called to the lookout point by one of Almah’s guards, they soon discovered that the gnolls in Kelmarane were preparing for war and that the signs in the hills showed that they had called for assistance from their fellow tribes.

After a meeting with Almah, it was quickly decided that they should prefare for an assault from Kelmarane. The heroes worked through the night in order to dig trenches and prepare traps for the attackers. Nini and Ding helped with the digging for a time, but then both decided to help by continuing to prepare the Pesh that Nin had started making a few days ago. Vash and Kay’enn helped coordinate the men, while Khalid prepared some poisons and bombs with the help of Zastoran.

At first light, an alarm was raised when a large creature was seen coming from Kelmarane. The order was given for people to hide, an order quickly obeyed. As time passed, a creature with a stag’s body, a hawk’s wings and talons, and the head of a slavering wolf with a rack of sharp antlers on its brow, circled the monoasty. Khalid was kept from launching an attack on the beast when it landed and circled the perimeter, apparently scouting the party’s defences. A short time later it left, and flew directly towards the Battle Market. It disappeared inside for a time, and then exited via a top balcony, and tdown to a building close to the waters edge.

The heroes knew that time was short, and so they decided to rest before beginning their strikes into Kelmarane…
